Seit Februar 2009 existiert das ZIM-Projekt. Entstanden ist es aus dem Tntnet-Projekt, für die vom Directmedia-Verlag veröffentlichte Wikipedia-DVD einen Reader anzubieten, welcher auch unter Linux und Mac OS X funktioniert. Dieser TntZenoReader wurde mit der letzten DVD-Ausgabe des Verlags veröffentlicht. ZIM steht für „Zeno Improved“ und stellt die Weiterentwicklung des Zeno-Dateiformates dar. Alle dafür notwendigen Software-Komponenten, Bibliotheken und Dokumentationen werden vom openZIM-Projekt unter einer freien GNU-Lizenz veröffentlicht.  
The openZIM project exists since February 2009. The ancestor was the TntReader project which followed a call by Directmedia to develop an open source reader application for the Zeno file format. Directmedia defined this format to publish Wikipedia on a DVD. The last DVD 2007/2008 published by Directmedia contained beside the proprietary reader for Windows for the first time the TntReader as open source software which ran on Linux and Mac OS X. As Directmedia does not publish Wikipedia on DVD further the openZIM project expanded and published the Zeno file format as the ZIM (Zeno IMproved) file format. All necessary software and documentation which was made by openZIM is released under GPL.

Wikimedia CH ist ein von der Wikimedia Foundation anerkannter lokaler Förderverein, mit dem Ziel, Projekte zum Erstellen freien Inhalts zu unterstützen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf Projekten der Wikimedia Foundation, das größte ist die Wikipedia. Seit der Gründung 2001 sind dort über 900.000 Artikel in deutscher Sprache entstanden und bei Wikipedia abrufbar. Damit ist die deutschsprachige Version die zweitgrößte nach der englischsprachigen Wikipedia.  
Wikimedia CH is a national association, approved by the Wikimedia Foundation and supporting free content creating projects. Its main focus are the projects of the Wikimedia Foundation, the biggest one is Wikipedia. Since its start more than 900.000 articles in german language have been written and are available online. By that is the german version the second largest after the english Wikipedia.

The association was established in 2006 to support the creation, collection and distribution if free content in a charitable way to ensure equal opportunities for everyone to obtain knowledge and education.
